The Muse has had to venture across the Bay Bridge this week and through the Caldicott Tunnel to the sweltering environs beyond. (People really live in that kind of heat, do they? Well, better them than me). After one too many bad burgers at overly air-conditioned theme restaurants in the burbs it was pretty clear by the third day that I would have to fill up before heading east. Can anyone say DONNER PARTY???? I also just needed the comfort of really delicious and familiar food. All of these places are an easy detour off of Highway 24. Please feel free to share any other recommendations you might have for this area.
Zachary's Chicago Pizza: Just a slice of hot, well spiced, loaded with cheese thin crust pizza.$3.00
Bittersweet, The Chocolate Cafe: We love this café. The good news is that they are coming to Fillmore Street this fall (in the space that was occupied by Caper). Try a brownie. I prefer the fudge one. It reminds me of Maida Heatter’s Palm Beach Brownie. An unusual thick crusty layer on top gives way to thick, moist fudge below. $3.25 each.
Fenton's: Okay, so maybe not such an easy detour but we all need ice cream, right? I don’t even try to snag a table. I love the single, generous scoop (two flavors are allowed) of Mocha Royale (deep deep deep coffee flavored ice cream with chocolate chips) and Toasted Almond (almond flavored ice cream with huge hunks of toasted almond). Single scoop $3.00
It has been a pleasure to return home each evening, around 7, to see the fog bank billow in under the Golden Gate Bridge. Wisps of fog break off and swirl around the City. So utterly beautiful it takes my breath away. How lucky we are.
fenton's rock, i wish we had somethin similar in the south bay
