Thursday mornings at the Marin Farmer's Market at the Marin Civic Center is my favorite time to shop. It is a lot less crowded than Sundays, which gives everyone a little more time to chat. Here are some highlights from last Thursday.
Overheard at a stall selling gorgeous tomatoes: Farmer to Chef "Oh good, glad that you are paying in cash today because your restaurant never pays its bills on time." All heads turned to stare. No, I don't know who the 30-something chef was. But he did have the good manners to look sheepish and apologize. I have the feeling that the accounts payable department got an earful that morning...
Remember my 6-27-05 posting on the $6 eggs from Marin Sun Farms? Well, there is a farm tour on Saturday, July 30. I have already signed up. Call David Evans at 415-663-8997, ex.201. The tour is $35; about 3 hours long and includes an all-organic lunch. The muse would love to meet you there. David had plenty of openings as of Thursday morning.
A mystery solved: 'ROSA' of 'Rosa's almonds' on the 5-31-05 posting about my great dinner at Manka's is Rosa De Santis. Rosa and Matteo drive up from Fresno to sell an amazing assortment of produce. It was like walking through your grandmother's Victory Garden, circa 1942. Green almonds, green walnuts (she displays the recipe to make an Italian digestive), mini yellow and green zucchini, tiny ornamental pomegranates, home cured green olives the size of your entire thumb, tomatoes...I told her how much I had enjoyed the almonds on my salad at Manka's in May. She smiled and pointed to a tall stack of crates that the folks from Manka's had gathered up that morning. It was great to see how proud and pleased she is to see her wonderful produce go to a restaurant that handles it with such loving care and intelligence.

D, I will do my best sleuthing job to find out.
Paris in the fall is always lovely. When I visit, which I hope will be soon, I promise to bring Peets!
By the way, despite the heat, my friend Nancy and her daughter had a great time on your tour last month. She thinks you are wonderful!

Compared to France, those $6 eggs are a bargain! Hey, when are you coming to visit? When you do, bring tomatoes (and Peet's coffee.)
xx David
PS: Please find out who that chef is and report back to us. Inquiring minds want to know...
