And what, exactly, do they have in common? The fabulous 1930's, dear readers. Do you swoon when you watch a black and white movie made in Hollywood during its Golden Age? Does your heart skip a beat when you walk into the Paramount theater in Oakland or watch episodes of Hercule Poirot on A&E? Do you wish men still wore hats and knew how to tip them when passing a lady? Is there a black cocktail dress with matching hat, seamed stockings and black faille pumps stuffed into the back of your closet just screaming to be let out? Do you yearn to wear a gardenia corsage? Well tomorrow night, July 20, 2006, is the night. Even if you are not (yet) a member of the ART DECO SOCIETY of San Francisco you are invited to an evening at THE CITY CLUB OF SAN FRANCISCO to sip a cocktail or two and enjoy the evening’s performance of ‘Garbo’s Cuban Lover’ described as "a suspenseful drama which explores the glamorous and secretive lives of Hollywood’s Golden Age’s most celebrated divas: Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich, and their love affairs with enigmatic Mercedes de Acosta".
There are several reasons you should attend this event if Art Deco speaks to your soul. Besides the pure entertainment value of the evening’s performance this is a great chance to see the inside of the private City Club, a San Francisco Art Deco masterpiece (do not miss a chance to peek into the Game Room). There is a Chanteuse chanteusing tunes from the 30's (note the gardenia tucked neatly behind one ear) as she accompanies herself on a piano. There are ladies in suits, hats and gloves and gentlemen wearing wide ties and narrow collars. There is a Diego Rivera mural celebrating the bounty of the state of California. The guests are friendly and inviting as they recognize kindred spirits. And if that is not enough to tempt you there is a full no-host bar pouring ice cold martinis. As always, vintage Art Deco attire is admired but not required.
Call the ADSC hotline (415)982-DECO (3326) to reserve your seats. Admission is $20, $5 off for ADSC members and City Club members. Be sure to check out the ART DECO SOCIETY website for a listing of all the organization's activities as well as activities of interest to its members.
Have a truly fabulous evening, K...I know you'll look SO gorgeous and have SUCH fun that you'll have Garbo twisting in her grave with envy!
